Copper export

THE Metal Recyclers Association (MRA) says the export ban on scrap copper to stem the economic damage from cable theft and vandalism of infrastructure won’t work.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel implemented a six-month ban this week.

Speaking on SAFM, MRA’s trade adviser, Donald Mackay, said banning the sale of scrap metals for cash, tracking machinery used to melt copper and issuing permits to scrap metal companies were important.

However, he said the ban won’t have much impact because it did not include melted products. Criminal enterprises had unreliable bookkeeping to track the volume of stolen copper items and over the past 10 years, the volumes of scrap metal exports had dropped. |
