LIFE INSURANCE
South Africa’s five largest life insurers have seen death claims against fully underwritten life policies starting to return to pre-Covid-19 levels. The Death Claims Dashboard, maintained by the Actuarial Society of South Africa, shows that 617 death claims were received in August 2022 – the lowest since April 2020, when 540 death claims were submitted. Anja Kuys, chair of the society’s Continuous Statistical Investigation Committee, says the usual number of claims expected for fully underwritten new-generation life policies was between 600 and 700 a month in prepandemic years. Claims increased rapidly from June 2020, peaking above 2 700 per month twice: in January and July 2021.
