IT might seem like it’s all about fun and loud music, however dancing has far more benefits than teaching your kids flexibility and fancy moves on the dance floor.

Unathi Jacob who is hosting a dance competition for children today, Saturday, at a multifunctional park in Khayelitsha’s G Section said teaching kids to dance affords them the opportunity of exercise and also learning dance as an art form. The competition will be starting at 12pm.

“Dance teaches kids of all ages, skills such as problem solving, mental flexibility, creativity, teamwork, self-confidence and more. Kids who dance learn to appreciate arts and cultural diversity,” said Jacobs.

She said for parents who want their kids to be happy, healthy and have self-confidence then dancing is recommended. Jacobs said the competition that she will be hosting is a collaboration between herself and a few other

individuals who are also into youth development.

“It’s an opportunity for dancers to showcase their skills and stand a chance of winning gear that is sponsored by the local brands,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs has the following tips for kids who would like to start dancing: Practise every chance you get. Put yourself out there through collaborations. Look for a dance group in your community or start one. This will help you to learn the value of teamwork and it will also train you when it comes to versatility. Look for dance institutions like Dance for All/ Zama Dance School. These will expose you to other styles of dance again. Make videos and get them out there, you never know who might see you and want to work. Make sure you exercise. Be unique! Create your own moves and collaborate with local artists, make music videos and that opens up another world where you are known as that dancer that has their own dances. Be consistent.
