Getting to know the chivalrous Kaige Bertasso

SAMEER NAIK sameer.naik@inl.co.za

REALITY TV star and musician Kaige Bertasso is best known for featuring on the hit reality show Love Island.

The Durban-based tennis coach, 23, who looked for love in the first season of the popular show, was unsuccessful and ended up being the first to exit the show voluntarily.

In the end, he discovered his passion for music, and it has borne fruit. Last week, he released his song Finding Me on digital platforms.

You are able to watch any artist live in concert anywhere around the globe. Who do you choose and why?

Definitely AC/DC. They've been my favourite band since I was a little kid. To see them live and performing would be a dream come true. I love rock 'n' roll, that whole era of music. I consider myself an old soul and relate a lot more to that era of music.

Tell us about the worst date you’ve ever been on

I went out with a girl who from the get-go had me thinking, this is going to be fun. I opened the car door for her, and she said she can do it herself.

When I pulled out her chair at the restaurant, she said she's not crippled. Then, the whole night's conversation was led by how much money she has and that she doesn't need a man to pay for her, but me being me and how I was raised, I was always going to pay.

However, as soon as the bill arrived she ran off to the bathroom. Your favourite item of clothing in your closet currently is

My Jordan 1s. I have so many different pairs yet I want more. I'm obsessed with them. Only time they're not on my feet is if I'm sleeping.

Your favourite restaurant in South Africa is? And what do you order?

It would probably be Tasca Pizza, and nine times out of 10 I get the BBQ chicken pizza.

What is the biggest regret you have in your life?

I don't have any regrets. Every decision I've made has shaped me into the man I am today. Life is about learning and growing, and making mistakes is normal.

What is your definition of love?

For me, love is kind, it's caring, it's patient, it doesn't judge. It's a feeling you can't describe. It's something that makes you do things you wouldn't normally do for anyone else. For the people I love, I'd give the clothes off my back. It's a safe place to be who you are, to be accepted and free.

You are on death row. You are given one last meal and a drink of your choice. What do you choose?

Definitely a pizza with all Italian cold meats on it, like salami, Parma ham, chorizo, mortadella, prosciutto and a glass of Chivas Regal whisky, the 18-year-old bottle.

What Netflix show should everyone be watching right now?

My favourite show was Lucifer.

If you haven't watched it, you are definitely missing out.

What one thing has caught your attention on social media in the last week?

My last week has been anything but normal. I've packed up my life in Durban and moved to the beautiful city of Cape Town with my girlfriend, so between the long drive to Cape Town and unpacking all the boxes and organising the move, I haven't been on my phone much. The only thing I've really seen a lot of is the ending of the Formula 1 season, as it's something I love watching every Sunday.

Your idea of the perfect date is?

Sitting on the beach watching the sunset on a huge blanket with all my favourite types of sushi and a good bottle of red wine. Then as the sun sets completely, a bonfire is lit and we lie on the blanket looking at the stars while getting to know one another.
