Cape Argus E-dition

NEIL HAYWARD BRIDGE

Opening Lead: ♦T. East wins two diamond tricks, then switches to a club. What is your plan?

Recommended Line: There is a recurring theme here. Ordinarily, you will lose two diamonds, and, given your combined ten cards in spades, just one trump trick. Since everything seems rosy, ask the key question: what could go wrong? You arrive at this conclusion: the only tricky case is when the spades break 3-0. In that case, two trump tricks can be lost. Now comes the key thought: it is not possible to deal with West holding three spades. You can, however, deal with East holding all the spades, by leading low to the ♠K as your first move. If East does hold all the spades, you will, in due course, lead a heart to the dummy to finesse against East’s remaining trumps. Focus on what you can control.
