A book to encourage children to tolerate each other

THANDILE KONCO

A BOOKSHELF can be a useful tool in learning new things and dealing with difficult situations. All are Welcome is a wonderful children’s book that teaches about inclusion and diversity.

The book is written by Alexandra Penfold and illustrated by Suzanne

Kaufman. It makes use of easy-to-read words and bright cartoonlike animation which make it suitable for children as young as 3 years old.

Author Trudy Ludwig described this colourful book as one that celebrates diversity and inclusion in a beautiful, age-appropriate way. Through imagery and poetic devices, children are easily able to follow the narrative and learn.

The book follows a group of children through a day in their school, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. A school where pupils from all backgrounds learn from and celebrate each other’s traditions and show us what the world could be like if we were tolerant.

The animations show children of different shapes, shades, sizes and religions, promoting inclusion and diversity in the classroom. All characters have expressive faces, making it easy for even toddlers to identify the

emotions depicted.

All are Welcome is a book that encourages positive school environments where all young children have a safe place, a comfortable space, and a healthy place to play and engage with others. The book uses circular imagery and a range of different colours to show diversity and antiadversity.

The sentences are short and repetitive and sound like a poem or song, with fun rhyming words.
