KICKBOXING teaches you techniques and skills that you can use to protect yourself in times of trouble.

The Yadav siblings recently dominated their respective classes at the South African Kickboxing Championships in Pretoria.

Sidharth, 17, bagged gold in the 57kg semi- and full-contact categories, Riyaa, 16, struck gold in the 50kg semi- and full-contact categories and Tanya, 11, finished third in the 34kg semi- and full-contact categories.

Sidharth said he was relieved that his hard work paid off. “I was exhausted after my performances. I had to beat six opponents before making the final, however, it was a huge relief and sense of pride when I became champion.

“I love kickboxing because it

teaches me discipline, self-respect, helps me stay focused and it keeps me fit too,” he said.

Riyaa said it was a dream. “The competition was very tough and tense but I managed to come out on top. It was an exciting and incredible feeling when I was on the podium. Kickboxing keeps me fit and in shape.”

Both Sidharth and Riyaa have won at national level before.

Tanya, who won at national level in 2018 and 2019, said: “It was not my best performance but I will bounce back next year.”

The siblings journey in the sport started a few years ago. In 2015, the trio went to Strand Indoor Swimming Pool. While walking to the pools their mom Christian spotted the sensei at Invictus Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness Academy in Strand, who invited them to a training session. After watching, the children wanted to join and their mom took them the next day for training. Dad Chandra said: “I feel proud of their achievements.”
