Elsies High wins space debate

ELSIES River High School has walked off with a trophy from the South African Astronomical Observatory after winning a debate based on astronomy and space.

The debate took place on September 9 and was hosted at the Cape Town Science Centre.

The school competed against Cape Academy of Maths and Science and Technology. Buzani Khumalo, the education officer for the South African Astronomical Observatory, said the winning team received a trophy and a scientific calculator with eight pupils in total competing.

Khumalo added they hoped to host the event annually.

Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology affirmed the topic and Elsies River High School opposed the topic.

Elsies River High School’s official Facebook Page received over 500 likes

and 216 shares after their win was featured.

Spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department Millicent Merton added to the congratulation wishes.

“We would like to congratulate Ms Cher Franks and the pupils for winning the debate. It shows what pupils can achieve when they have a teacher who believes in their potential and who guides their learning and growth. We also commend the pupils for the effort they put in to prepare for the competition and their excellent performance on the day…”
