NEIL HAYWARD BRIDGE
Contract: 3NT by South
Opening Lead: ♥4 is led to East’s ♥K. What is your plan?
Recommended Line: If you see a problem, the solution can still be tough to find. If you don’t see a problem, looking for a solution won’t even cross your mind. The problem here is that, if you win the first trick, and follow with what seems to be the “obvious” next move, leading a diamond to the dummy, East can win and lead a heart through your remaining Q-T. West’s hearts are then well on the way to being established. A further problem is that the diamonds will not fare well in the light of East’s holding. If you see these problems, you should find the solution. At trick two, cross to a club on table, and lead a diamond towards hand. If East hops up with the ♦A, in order to lead a heart, you make four diamond tricks. If West holds the ♦A, and wins, a further heart lead suits you perfectly. If East ducks the first diamond, you can switch to spades, making three spades, two hearts, two diamonds and three clubs. Admittedly, this line is most appropriate if playing rubber bridge, using BONE/ BODD scoring, or playing in a teams context.
