A day to celebrate our coastal areas, their wildlife

STAFF REPORTER

TODAY is Marine Protected Areas Day. Did you know South Africa has 41 marine protected areas?

Spokesperson for the Two Ocean’s Aquarium Renee Leeuwner shared some facts about the areas.

“These areas make up 5% of our coastlines and they have a positive impact, not only on the marine life found in the area, but also on surrounding communities and the economy of the area.”

Here are five quick reasons why marine protected areas are important:

They support nearby fisheries.

They ensure healthy marine animals.

They help with job creation. They assist in combating climate change.

They also contribute to important research.

There are many ways you can get involved in celebrating the day, such as visiting a marine protected area and telling others about them and their importance.
