18 bust for re-registering stolen vehicles

NINE employees of three vehicle licensing departments and nine other suspects were arrested by a team of the Hawks from Cape Town for allegedly re-registering stolen vehicles.

The suspects between the ages of 32 and 63 were arrested during the project headed by the Hawks, the Directorate of Priority Crimes and the Road Traffic Management Cooperation.

After an in-depth investigation several stolen vehicles were found which had been sold to unsuspecting customers who bought them from second-hand car dealers.

In another part of the investigation, nine others were arrested, bringing the total to 18. The Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase said the bust took place in Gauteng.

“The Hawks’ integrated team based in Cape Town that includes Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Serious Corruption Investigation and Road Traffic Management Cooperation clamped down on nine suspects between the age of 32 and 62, nabbed during a second leg of a project driven investigation in Gauteng on Thursday.”
