Omicron

THERE has been a widespread outcry after several countries placed travel restrictions on South Africa following the announcement of a new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529 or Omicron.

The SA Health Department believes that the new variant is behind Gauteng’s spike in new infections.

However, Professor Tulio de Oliveira, the director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, tweeted that the world should support South Africa and Africa, and not discriminate against or isolate it.

He added that South Africa had been very transparent with its scientific information. | IOL
