Cape Argus E-dition

Biggs kept his feet on the ground

A SEASONED columnist of the calibre of David Biggs is few and far between.

He is arguably the only columnist in South Africa that had the humility to "keep his feet on the ground", with his Bromponie for as long as I can remember … and that is nearly 50 years. He either never aspired to be part of the four-wheel elite or unlike most of his contemporaries was not swayed into debt by Black Friday deals.

Whenever I picked up the Cape Argus his column was the first page I turned to.

I cannot imagine this anchor who has been an integral component of the Argus pagination spanning so many years, will no longer be factored into the equation.

Many are the fond memories I have of David in the corridors of a once bustling Newspaper House.

One incident that comes to mind is when both of us found ourselves rushing to the toilet before we suffered a burst bladder. Standing shoulder to shoulder I said to him … we are drawing a curse upon ourselves by doing this … when are you going to write: “Cursed is the man that pisses against the wall.” it is a direct quote from the Bible.

He chuckled and with his dry humour said he’d consider but never got to it.

Perhaps now in retirement David will have more time to spend reading the Bible and perhaps … just perhaps … write that pissing against the wall for one of our few magazines that have survived to the digital revolution.
