Cape Argus E-dition

Amazon does not yet truly compete with local online traders

THE story on the Cape Argus front page (November 25) applies.

A close look through the anticolonial microscope reveals that there is apparently no land in the City of Cape Town that is not sacred in terms of Goringhaicona Khoi heritage. The whole city bowl is supposed to be theirs, isn’t it?

The funny thing about their claims re Amazon is that there isn’t even any local South African internet order platform exclusively maintained by Amazon like amazon. co.za. In other words, Amazon does not yet truly compete with locally established online traders like Takealot or Loot. If for instance you’d like to order any batch of English books it is going to be delivered from the UK or US at steep extra costs.

Will the activists please inform the public on working conditions at the above local competitors? Amazon is running a top IT department in Cape Town, on par with that of their HO in Seattle. Anything wrong with that?

The plot itself is not such a large tract of land.

It seems to be the old African story whether to live in a basic nomadic beehive hut or in a block of flats with all 21st century amenities. HORST LINDSTEDT | Vredehoek
